Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the first phase of the Al Taawun Interchange project on Wednesday, a key milestone in Sharjah's Dh750 million programme to ease chronic congestion on the emirate's main corridor into Dubai. The opening coincided with the start of the Sharjah International Book Fair, running from November 4 to 15, an event that typically draws heavy traffic toward Expo Centre Sharjah.
The first phase has opened a one-directional route running from Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road toward Expo Centre Sharjah. At the heart of the wider scheme is the Al Taawun Tunnel, designed with three lanes in each direction, which authorities say could cut waiting times on the route by as much as 85 per cent once fully completed by February 2027.
The Dh750 million project was first announced in June and forms part of a broader effort by Sharjah's roads authority to modernise the emirate's network and smooth the daily commute for residents who travel between Sharjah and Dubai for work. Rapid population growth and a wave of new residential construction in Sharjah have made the Dubai-bound corridor one of the most congested stretches in the northern emirates in recent years.
Timing the first phase's opening to the book fair is a deliberate move, officials say, since the 12-day event is one of the region's largest cultural gatherings and historically brings a sharp spike in traffic around the exhibition grounds. As subsequent phases of the interchange come online through early 2027, authorities expect noticeably smoother peak-hour traffic along the Sharjah-Dubai corridor, benefiting both daily commuters and visitors to major events hosted in the emirate.
